It arrives in one of three ways. A returned draft with more red than black. A partner’s tone on the telephone, flat where it was warm yesterday. A senior saying, in front of others, that this is not what was asked for. For a candidate attorney the moment is physical before it is anything else: heat in the face, a tightening in the chest, a mind that suddenly cannot find words it knew perfectly well a minute ago. A junior, call him Kagiso, described the first time it happened to him as standing in the passage outside a director’s office and being unable to remember which floor his own desk was on.
It does not stop happening with seniority; it changes its source. An associate is corrected by a partner. A partner is corrected by a client who has read the opinion and does not like it, or by a judge who says from the bench that counsel has misread the authority. A senior advocate hears it from the appeal court. A general counsel hears it from the board. The tone is different and the setting is grander, but the body does the same thing, and a person who has practised for twenty-five years can still find themselves standing outside a courtroom with their mind gone entirely blank. The professional cost of that blankness rises with seniority, because more depends on what the senior person does next.
What happens in the ten minutes after that moment decides whether the afternoon is lost or not. It is worth understanding what the body is doing, because the response that works is counter-intuitive, and the response that feels natural makes it worse.
What is happening
A correction from someone whose opinion matters is received by the brain as a threat. The threat is to standing in the group rather than to life, but for a social species the two have never been far apart, and the machinery that responds is the same. The amygdala fires. Adrenaline and cortisol follow within seconds. Blood flow and neural resources shift away from the prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain you need for drafting, reasoning, weighing alternatives and remembering the case you read yesterday, and toward the systems that handle rapid physical response. Amy Arnsten’s review in Nature Reviews Neuroscience describes how even mild, uncontrollable stress rapidly impairs prefrontal function while strengthening the older, faster circuits; the paper sets out the chemistry in detail. This is why you cannot think clearly for a while afterwards. The equipment has been temporarily reassigned to a job you do not need it for, which is running from a predator that is not there.
Knowing this changes the interpretation. The blankness is a predictable physiological state with a predictable duration, rather than evidence that you are out of your depth. Left alone, it clears in something between twenty minutes and an hour, depending on what you do with it. There are ways to shorten it considerably, and there are ways, mostly the ones that feel natural, to extend it into the whole afternoon.
Three things that shorten it
The first is breath, done deliberately. A slow exhale, longer than the inhale, repeated five or six times, is the fastest signal the body accepts that the threat has passed. It works because the long exhale engages the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system directly, through the vagus nerve, and the parasympathetic system is the one that stands the stress response down. A review by Zaccaro and colleagues in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience gathers the evidence that slow breathing produces measurable changes in heart rate variability, brain activity and reported calm; the review is worth reading once so that you never have to take this on trust. It requires no belief in it to function. Do it at the desk, or in the passage, or in the lift, before doing anything else.
The second is pen and paper. Write down, in one line each, what was actually said. Not what it meant, not what it implies about you, not the tone: what was said. “Clause 4 does not follow from clause 3.” “The heading format is wrong.” “She wanted a table rather than prose.” Writing engages the prefrontal cortex, which is exactly the region the stress response has sidelined, and the act of doing so begins to bring it back online. Most corrections, written down, turn out to be three or four specific and fixable points. The correction that felt like a verdict on your competence usually looks, on paper, like a to-do list.
The third is to do one small piece of the fix immediately, before the story about the correction has time to set. Fix the heading. Move clause 4. Build the table. The brain takes competent action as evidence that the threat is over and that the person is in control of the situation, and the stress chemistry begins to clear. Fifteen minutes of small, correct work does more for the afternoon than an hour of thinking about it.
What not to do
Do not open the email again and reread the correction looking for tone. An email carries whatever tone the reader brings to it, and in the ten minutes after a correction you bring the worst one available. Do not go and tell a colleague, yet. The retelling keeps the threat alive, and the colleague’s sympathy, however kind, confirms to the body that something threatening happened. And do not decide anything about your future in the profession in that ten minutes. Nothing decided in that state is reliable, which is the same reason a partner should not sign an opinion at the end of a fourteen-hour day. The prefrontal cortex that would do the deciding is exactly the part that is offline.
If you are the one delivering it
Seniors deliver corrections many times a week, usually under their own pressure, and rarely think about what the next ten minutes look like for the person receiving them. It is worth thinking about, for a practical reason: a junior whose prefrontal cortex is offline for the rest of the afternoon produces nothing useful during that afternoon, and the fix you asked for arrives tomorrow instead of today.
Three small adjustments change the receiving end considerably. Deliver the correction in private where you can; a correction in front of others adds a second threat, to standing, on top of the first. Be specific about what is wrong, because a specific correction can be written down and fixed, while “this is not what I asked for” leaves the junior’s brain to fill in the meaning, and it will fill it with the worst option available. And, if you can manage it, say what was right. That is practical rather than soft. A sentence like “the analysis is sound, the structure needs to change” gives the junior’s brain a reason to stand the threat response down, and gets you the redraft faster.
The correction will still be there in an hour. So will you, with your prefrontal cortex back online, able to see it for what it is: information about the firm’s standard, or the client’s preference, or the court’s reading of an authority, delivered by someone who was busy. That is a much smaller thing than it felt like in the passage.
